BRISTOL & DISTRICT ANTI-CUTS ALLIANCE BULLETIN – 21st September 2012

Cuts Fights Continue As Autumn Approaches

The BADACA Open Meeting on Monday 24th September will discuss many of the campaigns, locally and nationally, that will take the fight against the cuts forward over the autumn months. Defending Bristol’s care services, the fight against regional pay in the NHS, the TUC-organised anti-austerity demonstration on October 20th and ensuring that candidates on Bristol’s mayoral election commit themselves to oppose cuts. Details are below and here. Please come along and join us in these important campaigns.

Last Tuesday’s meeting of Bristol City Council got the message loud and clear that Bristol wants to retain it’s publicly owned and run care homes and day centres for the elderly and vulnerable. A petition of over 3000 signatures was submitted. The public gallery was packed to hear a series of questions and statements to councillors demanding a change of policy. An uncomfortable evening for councillors, particularly LibDems. Report here. Photos here. Evening Post report here. Webcast here. Discussions are taking place to decide how to carry the campaign forward. This will include pressing candidates in the mayoral election to commit themselves to reversing the LibDem closures and privatisations. Look out for details soon.

BADACA will publicise details of hustings meetings for the mayoral election. We want to make sure that candidates are forced to face up to the key local issues – cuts and privatisation of jobs and services. Current details of hustings meetings are here. This information will be updated regularly so keep an eye on it, attend the meetings and ask questions.

The TUC (October 20th) and National Union Of Students (November 21st) are organising major demonstrations in London over the coming weeks. Report here. Look out for information on coaches from Bristol soon. A student film setting out the case for supporting the demonstrations can be seen here. Facebook for 20th October here. Information on TUC website here. Facebook for 21st November here.
