Advice on Videoing Saturday’s Demonstration

By | July 12, 2012 | Categories: Protests & Strikes

Thanks to Mike Luff for providing the following tips on making videos of Saturday’s EDL demo & counter-demos.

Before you video and upload onto Youtube etc, have a look at Witness Video Advocacy training film. This raises the issues of your responsibilities to those who you film on any demonstration.

Consider what to film. If you aim to show Bristol’s mass protest, and how the police behave, try:

1. Wide shots from high vantage point of the actions taken by the police against protestors, show the size of the protests – rally, marches etc

2. Closer shots of trade union banners, placards, peaceful assemblies, protestors, speeches etc.

3. Film the numbers on police shoulders which may be needed for court cases.

The BBC etc. will show close up incidents which portray anything other than mass action and the message being sent.
