30-40 people came along to BADACA’s public meeting on the NHS last Monday, 28th May. The meeting was addressed by John Lister, Director of London Health Emergency- a pressure group which has been defending NHS services and fighting health cuts & privatisation since 1983.
John outlined some of the changes to the NHS which are intended to flow from the highly controversial Health & Social Care Act recently passed by ConDem government such as GP Clinical Commissioning Groups, Local Health & Wellbeing Boards and the fake ‘Social Enterprises’ (as in Bristol Community Health). Many of these changes are intended to let health secretary Andrew Lansley’s friends and financial backers such as Care UK and Richard Branson’s Virgin Healthcare, cherry pick profitable parts of the NHS budget for their own benefit.
John said that already in parts of Essex, for example, the NHS is denying people what used to be routine operations such as hip replacements, forcing anyone who can afford to go private to spend their savings on the operation, and everyone else to live in pain for the rest of their lives.
As the chaos of the NHS changes plays out, BADACA will be analysing events locally and determining the best people and organisations to target in our campaign against NHS cuts and privatisation.
