Lobby Your Council – No Cuts

Over the next 10 days, councils locally will be setting their budgets for 2012/3. North Somerset on Tuesday 21st February, South Gloucestershire on Wednesday 22nd February and Bristol on Tuesday 28th February. In every case the budgets contain swingeing cuts to services and jobs. 350 jobs will be lost in Bristol. Every job lost means one more person without work – even if compulsory redundancy isn’t involved. All those out of work will soon be hit by the government’s benefit cuts. In Bristol there are hugecuts in grants to community groups – see details here. And of course there are the remarkably vague proposals to close/privatise care homes & day centres and privatise the youth service.

BADACA will be working with all those effected by the proposals to mount the largest possible lobbies at these council meetings. We won’t be arguing that any individual service should be saved at the expense of others, but that the whole budget is inadequate to meet the needs of local people. Details are below including links to flyers and posters. Please pass the details on to friends/neighbours/colleagues and publicise as widely as possible.

We have important work to do to publicise the Bristol lobby – we need your help. Please come to Broadmead on Saturday 25th February and/or meet outside the Council House at 8am on Tuesday 28th February. Full details are below.

After the successful meeting at the Council House earlier in the month, held jointly by BADACA and Unite The Resistance and in the run up to a probable national strike in the public sector pensions dispute later in March, BADACA will be calling a meeting of trades unionists involved in the dispute in a couple of weeks with the aim of maximising participation and support for the strike when it is called. Look out for full details next week. Once the strike date is announced, BADACA will work alongside the local trades unions to ensure the day is a success in Bristol.

An important public meeting organised by Black Activists Rising Against The Cuts (BARAC) takes place on Friday 24th February – part of the spreading campaign locally to protect funding of community groups. Details below.

And try to come to the BADACA AGM on Monday February 27th. Details are below and Facebook here. Apart from discussing how BADACA will develop over the coming year, we will be making final plans for the lobby on February 28th. If you come to the AGM please be prepared to pay an individual affiliation to BADACA for 2012 – we request £5 per person but no amount (larger or smaller) is refused.

Please try to get involved in as many of the activities below as possible and pass the information on to others who may be interested.
