BRISTOL & DISTRICT ANTI-CUTS ALLIANCE
Open Meeting – Monday July 4th 7.30pm
Friends Meeting House, Champion Square (River Street), Bristol BS2 9DB
Stop The Privatisation Of Social Care and The NHS
Last week Bristol City Council announced plans for a massive attack on residential and day care services in the city. This involves moving up to 500 residents in order to save £20 million pounds. Day care provision for people with learning difficulties and elderly people will be closed. The council are dressing this up as progressive!! They say it’s all about choice but the choice to stay in their current homes won’t be available to these 500 people. In many cases they have lived there for years.
The council wants to rush through this huge cut as quickly as possible. The ‘consultation’ involves just 2 meetings. One is at the Greenway Centre, Southmead at 6pm on Tuesday 28th June and then at the Council House on Friday 1st July at 2pm. They want to wrap it all up over the summer months and force it through by September. (see below for details of consultation meetings)
These changes will mean mass privatisation of services with cuts to pay, conditions and pension rights for those working to support and care for these vulnerable people. Those services that remain, provided by the private sector, are likely to be of a lower standard. At the moment the reality of private care is firmly under the spotlight. With the scandal at the Winterbourne View care home for people with learning disabilities, the collapse of Southern Cross and the revelations about standards of private home care services there is a real chance of a building a major campaign locally to stop this dismantling of welfare services in Bristol.
Come to the BADACA open meeting to hear more about these proposals and discuss how we can build a campaign with others to show the council that we aren’t going to let them get away with this attack. A flyer for the meeting is available here. All welcome.
